Decision support for equitable and sustainable communities

The best efforts to promote social equity and community sustainability are both utopian and pragmatic. They pursue an image of the future that is compelling enough to galvanize support from community stakeholders and impact investors alike. But these efforts are also shaped by a realistic understanding of market conditions, the financial possibilities and constraints, the metrics of success, and the strengths and weaknesses of the implementing organizations.

I Squared Community Development Consulting can help you navigate the challenging realities of realizing your vision for equitable and sustainable communities – assisting you in your role as a “change agent” to inspire people to work together, while backing you up with rigorous research, data analysis, and financial modeling.

About Us

Eric Hangen has worked in community development for over 30 years. For over 20 years he has run I Squared Community Development Consulting, a national, boutique consulting practice focused on social impact finance. Clients have included over 100 community development and community development finance organizations across the United States. Throughout his career he has promoted initiatives at the intersection of community development and climate mitigation.

Eric currently serves as Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Community Sustainability Partners, a nonprofit organization working to incorporate community development into the clean energy transition. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Carsey School Center for Impact Finance at the University of New Hampshire, where he studies climate finance in low-income communities.

Eric combines his climate expertise with deep expertise in community development finance. He has provided strategic planning, business planning, and financial modeling services to dozens of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) across the US, and was the co-author of the first program evaluation of the CDFI Fund. He publishes on CDFIs and equitable access to capital with both the University of New Hampshire and the Urban Institute.
